Our Story

Fifth Thread was born in Toronto, but it began with a moment that shifted how I understood clothing entirely.

It started with a trip to Thailand to visit my wife’s family. During that visit, we came to appreciate more deeply the legacy behind her upbringing. Her grandfather founded a small tailoring shop in a town in northern Thailand, commissioning garments for his clients and working alongside skilled seamstresses who brought each piece to life. As demand grew, the business expanded to the capital, where it continued to flourish under her father’s leadership, guided by the same standards and discipline.

In their family, tailoring was never just about clothing. It was about reputation, care, and standing behind what you create for years to come.

When we stepped into the workshop, there was a quiet rhythm to the space. Fabrics were handled with respect. Measurements were taken without rush. Nothing felt excessive or careless. It was an environment built on patience and precision.

We decided to commission our own coats during that visit.

Standing for our measurements, watching chalk trace lines across cloth that would eventually shape something we would wear for years, the process felt deliberate in a way we had never experienced before. Fabrics were chosen carefully. Questions were asked. Adjustments were made. Fittings followed. There was time built into every step.

When the coats were finished, what we felt was more than satisfaction. It was a quiet confidence that came from knowing the garment had been created intentionally by people who took their craft seriously.

Returning to Canada, we began to see outerwear differently. In a country where winters demand resilience, coats are essential. Yet much of what fills the market is mass-produced, trend-driven, and constructed with synthetic fabrics that prioritize speed over longevity. Prices rise, but the connection to craftsmanship feels distant.

We kept thinking about that workshop in Bangkok and the care that shaped our coats. We realized that experience should not be rare. Craftsmanship should not feel inaccessible.

That is why we created Fifth Thread.

Fifth Thread brings a tailoring mindset to outerwear. We design with proportion and structure at the forefront. We select fabrics for integrity, not marketing. We consider how a coat layers, how it moves, and how it ages. Every piece is created with the belief that you will wear it for years, not months.

The name reflects the coat as the final layer in getting dressed, often the fifth. It is the layer that completes everything beneath it. It defines the silhouette and shields you from the elements. It is what the world sees first.

For us, Fifth Thread is deeply personal. It is a way to honour the legacy we witnessed in that workshop and to carry it forward. It is our commitment to ensuring that the layer you wear most is also the one made with the greatest care.
